The Castle Of Mesen. ‘Le Chateau de Mesen’ is a neo-gothic castle which resides caught up in its own time warp dating back to 1628. Occupying a7 hectare Public Park in the small town of Lede near Aalst in Belgium, you can still spy on the remains of the chapel, stables and even an orangery which once grew there. The castle was put to various minor local industrial uses in 1796 when it was no longer used for residential housing it became an all girl’s school from 1914 to 1970 accommodating up to 160 girls. Today the castle shows few signs of the school that it once was but every so often you find a children’s writing desk and the minuscule prison-like showers which can be found in the basement levels which are typical of such an establishment which catered to children in those older times. |
